Our Story

The Foundation

In 1868, a few families gathered together in Winfield, Pennsylvania, to start a local baptist church to be God's presence in the farming community of Union County. This small church grew over the next 100 years to be be a beacon of gospel truth across the valley, gathering men, women, and families from over 7 different school districts at a time when many were seeking solid Biblical teaching.  After over 100 years of faithfulness, Winfield Baptist Church followed God's call to start new churches in the Susquehanna Valley.  Seeing so many people having to leave their communities to attend a Biblical, Christ-exalting church the leadership decided to begin the process of sending people back to their communities in order to connect with those who have become disconnected from God or the church and to portray and proclaim the goodness of God across our valley. They decided to start in the community of Sunbury with a focus on the entire Shikellamy School District. Eight adults and their families answered the call and Sunbury City Church was launched on October 7, 2012, with a vision of connecting people to Jesus and the church in the hope of seeing our great city transformed.

The Focus

Since then, God has given us a vision of seeing the entire Shikellamy School District and the Central Susquehanna Valley saturated with glory of Jesus Christ through our faithful, generous, and enduring presence. We don't just want to be a building in the city, or even a program that takes from the city, but rather we seek to be God's people living in the midst of the city, seeking to bring, embrace, listen, and bless our city to the glory of God.  Thus our focus has been to integrate ourselves within the communities of Sunbury and Northumberland with the hope of seeing lives changed by Jesus Christ and seeing our communities changed as well.

The Future

In just a few short years, we have seen God do incredible things in our midst and in the lives of those who call Sunbury, PA their home.  Men and women have come to faith in Jesus Christ.  And others have matured and been equipped to minister to those around them.  And we have started multiple missional communities to further engage and encourage the community towards Christ.

Our prayer is that the story does not end there.  Rather we desire to be a church that starts other church movements across our valley and across the world.  Thus we eagerly await to see God work in even greater ways over the next few years!  Join us as we follow God's leading for our future.
