ELDER'S UPDATE

What is your Northstar?  They say ship captains will often look to the Northstar at night to determine if they are still heading in the right direction.  At a time when technology may fail you, the Northstar never will.  Recently, this idea came up in a conversation.  Life in 2022 seems more hectic and difficult than any other year, even more so than 2020.  So how do we navigate such difficult situations?  We remember our Northstar.  And scripture shows us that our Northstar ought to be Jesus Christ.  We can read about the promise given to Abraham in Genesis 12 and see how Jesus fulfills that promise.  Or we can read the prophets who foretell of a coming Messiah and know Jesus was and is that Messiah.  And we can read any New Testament letter and realize the single reality that Jesus died for our sin and rose from the dead is the central story that changes all other stories.  So many of us are in busy and hectic seasons.  Some of us are discouraged.  Others of us don’t know where to turn.  And still others of us feel overwhelmed.  In the midst of trials, we must remember our Northstar, Jesus Christ.  We need to strip everything else away and get back to the reality that life is all about Jesus.  Then we can re-engage life.  Will you join me in getting back to Jesus Christ and ensuring he guides our lives individually and corporately?

Summer is mission team time.  Over the last 2 months we hosted 2 different teams, one from Connelly Springs, NC and another from Indian Trail, NC.  You probably witnessed the work they accomplished around the church building, through the painting of the fellowship hall and the beautiful rock by our parking lot.  But what you probably didn’t notice are the hours they spent praying for us and our communities and the conversations they engaged.  Last year, as the team from Indian Trail walked the streets of Sunbury, they met a man in our community who expressed interest in the gospel.  Quickly they connected me (Pastor Derek) with this man.  Over the last year, we’ve met regularly to share the gospel.  After much hesitancy he attended one of our Sunday Gatherings for the first time.  Praise the Lord for the connections and work these teams are accomplishing in our community!

We want to hear from you! If you have a story of how you have seen God working in your life or the life of someone else in our church, we would love to include your story in our next newsletter. Please contact Rhiannon @ 570-850-2769 or by email at:  info@sunburycitychurch.org.
What's Happening At SCC

Members Meeting: September 11th directly following our Sunday service, we will host our next members meeting.  These are great times of fellowship along with hearing what God is doing in and through Sunbury City Church.  Please mark it on your calendar to attend.  Childcare and food will be provided.

Romans: What is God Like: We will be returning to our series in Romans on September 18th where we look at what is God like.  If you do not have a Romans scripture journal, check out our resource table to pick one up.  Additionally, feel free to check any of our past sermons to prepare yourself for the completion of this wonderful book!

Prayer Night: John Piper says prayer is a war-time walkie talkie, where the frontlines seek their commander for direction and help.  The Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 that we are in a spiritual war against Satan and his demonic realm.  The best weapon we have to fight this battle is gathering together to pray.  Thus we will gather again to pray and push back darkness in our community on Wednesday September 28th at 6:30pm. We want to encourage you to mark that date down and join us in prayer!

10 Year Anniversary:  On October 7th, we celebrate our 10 year anniversary as a church.  Praise the Lord for his constant provision.  During that time we’ve shared the gospel hundreds of times, seen over 10 people baptized, and received over $250,000 of external financial support towards the mission of reaching Sunbury with the gospel.  There is much to celebrate.  Therefore, we will celebrate on October 2nd, directly following our Sunday Gathering with a church-wide potluck at the pavilion area of Otterbein Methodist Church (4th St. Sunbury, next to CVS and Northumberland National Bank).  We would love for you to join us as we praise God together.

Missional Communities are groups of people gathering as a family, growing as servants, and going as missionaries to a designated target area to reach their neighbors with the good news of Jesus Christ.  Currently, we have four of these groups that meet and would love for you to join us!  If you are interested in joining a group, please contact us at: info@sunburycitychurch.org.

One Challenge
The New Testament describes the gospel of Jesus Christ as good news.  Paul says this news declares that there is no condemnation if we are in Christ Jesus.  And yet many in our community and our lives walk around with a weight of condemnation.  We want to encourage you to prayerfully consider who God has put in your life that you might begin to pray for their salvation and the opportunity to share the gospel with them.  Then we will display their name on our board so we can rejoice together in how God is using us to light our community with the gospel of Christ.
